How long does an interim executive engagement last?

Typically four to nine months. The length is set by the milestone, not the calendar: most engagements end once the company has reached it and hired the right permanent leader.

What sets the length

  • The milestone. Launching into a new segment, rebuilding go-to-market or getting operations ready to scale each take a different amount of time. We agree on the milestone at the start.
  • The permanent hire. If the engagement includes defining the role and hiring the permanent leader, the search and handover add time.
  • The size of the gap. Stepping into a working team is quicker than building one, or replacing processes that no longer fit.
  • Outside timelines. A board meeting, a funding round or a product launch can set a natural end point.

What a typical engagement looks like

Every engagement is different, but most follow a similar shape:

  1. The first month: assess and act. Learn the business, the market and the team quickly. Fix what’s urgent, and agree on the plan and how progress will be measured.
  2. The middle months: execute and build. Run the plan. Build the team, processes and systems that will keep delivering, AI-first from the start.
  3. The final phase: hire and hand over. Define the permanent role, help hire the right person, and hand over a working function with the plan, metrics and team in place.

Shorter and longer engagements

A focused project, such as repositioning before a funding round, can take less time. A pivot, an entry into a new market or a company that needs a whole leadership function built from scratch can take longer. If the milestone moves, the engagement can move with it.

Planning for a good ending

The best engagements are designed to end well. Define the milestone up front. Start thinking about the permanent role early, because the interim executive is often the best person to shape it. And plan an overlap, so the new leader inherits a working function rather than a to-do list.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an interim executive engagement last?

Typically four to nine months. The length depends on the milestone the company needs to reach, and most engagements end once it's reached and the right permanent leader has been hired.

Can an interim engagement be extended?

Yes. If the milestone moves, for example after a pivot or a new funding round, the engagement can be extended. We agree up front how to review progress and adjust.

How quickly can an interim executive start?

Much faster than a permanent hire, which often takes several months to search, interview and negotiate. Tell us your timeline and we'll tell you what's possible.

What happens at the end of an interim engagement?

A planned handover. The interim executive helps hire the permanent leader, overlaps with them where possible, and leaves the plan, team, processes and metrics in place.
